Hunt Yachts to Build 80’' Sport Motoryacht for Experienced Owner

Posted on Tue, Jan 28, 2014

Portsmouth, R.I. – January 31, 2014 – Hunt Yachts LLC is proud to announce it is building its largest model yet: the Hunt 80' Sport Motoryacht.  An experienced yachtsman who also owns a Hunt Harrier 25' has commissioned this new 80' Hunt flagship. Like the rest of the Hunt range of traditionally styled, elegant, functional and performance-oriented vessels, the 80' Sport Motoryacht features a hull and superstructure designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates, whose founder, Ray Hunt, invented the deep-V hull. Powered by twin 1,600-bhp diesels mated to Hamilton water-jet drives, the new 80' is projected to have a top speed in excess of 31 knots – combined with a draft of just 4 feet. It is due to launch in the summer of 2015.

The new Hunt 80' is based on a hull design that C. Raymond Hunt Associates conceived as a platform for a variety of yachts in the 63- to 82-foot size range. Its deep-V configuration and moderate beam enable it to slip easily through the water, enhancing the vessel’s speed and seakindliness in rough offshore conditions. This platform made its debut with the Hunt 68' Motoryacht, an offshore cruiser with attractive lines and outstanding performance. In the 80' Sport Motoryacht, the design firm has maintained those attributes while greatly expanding the living and entertaining spaces and adding a fully enclosed raised command flybridge.

The story behind the Hunt 80' Motoryacht.

The owner decided to build a bigger Hunt after experiencing the craftsmanship, handling and performance of his 2013 Harrier 25', which Hunt Yachts personalized for him with an extensive teak trim package and other options.

"When he first ran his Harrier, he said, 'It runs like a bandit. What's a big version going to be like?'" recalls Hunt Yachts President Peter VanLancker.

The owner, who also had a 70' European-built cruiser at the time, checked out the Hunt 44' Express Motoryacht and was just as impressed by its fit and finish. In addition, he sent his captain to seatrial a 40-knot, 60' aluminum water-jet-powered vessel that Hunt had designed for the New York Police Department. “They went flat out in New York Harbor,” VanLancker said. “The captain was blown away.”

The hull of this new boat and its motorization are well tested and based on the experience Hunt has developed with a dozen boats built for the U.S. Coast Guard and the N.Y. City Police Department. It certainly was a critical element in my purchase decision.”

The owner worked intensively with the Hunt design team and Hunt Yachts over a six-month period on the design of his highly customized new project. What started out as a 75' motoryacht quickly morphed into an 80-footer due to the owner’s desire for more open-air space on the flybridge and main decks. The tender was moved down to the extended swim platform in order to keep the aft portion of the flybridge clear for use as a sundeck.

He also specified that the vessel’s draft be 4 feet so he could use it in the shallow waters of Florida and the Bahamas. “I said, in that case we’ve got to go with water jets,” recalled Winn Willard, Vice President of C. Raymond Hunt Associates. While Hunt offers a wide range of propulsion options for its yacht models, it is highly experienced in designing and building water-jet vessels. “The Hamilton 651’s are big and efficient. The 80' won’t need bow thrusters or stern thrusters – it will do it all by itself,” Willard said.

The Hunt 80' Sport Motoryacht series features a three-stateroom layout with a full-beam master suite amidships, plus a fourth, “bonus” bunkroom that can accommodate a child, a nanny or another member of the owner’s staff. The lower deck layout also includes a separate crew quarters aft with a double stateroom for the captain and a bunk for another crewmember. The main deck encompasses a large galley, dining area, and main saloon opening onto a large open-air aft deck sheltered by the flybridge overhang.

Have it your way

“While the Hunt 80’s naval architecture is blueprinted, we are working closely with the owner to ensure the yacht is equipped with the joinery, furnishings, soft goods, etc., of his choosing,” Mr. Willard said, adding that with the teamwork of C. Raymond Hunt, the design firm, and Hunt Yachts, the builder, we are willing to alter floorplans and shift bulkheads, within reason. “With Hunt, you can have it your way.”

The semi-custom Hunt 80' and 68' Motoryachts are only the first two examples of the wide range of yachts based on this successful hull platform that are available from the partnership of C. Raymond Hunt Design and Hunt Yachts, LLC, the builder. “We have design for a 63' conventional motoryacht with a nice layout due to use of pod propulsion, which saves a lot of space,” Willard said. “At the upper end, with the mold extended to 82', we get all these variants starting with the very classic 82' Cockpit Motoryacht. We also have plans for a sophisticated 68' Sedan Express.”

“This hull design and the versatility it gives us to offer to owners is a big breakthrough for Hunt Yachts, and the new 80' Sport Motoryacht is the head of the train,” said VanLancker. “Our acquisition by Scout Partners in September, which made us a sister company to Hinckley, also is helping to stoke the engine because our service networks have merged, expanding our footprint. Look for more new models from Hunt in the near future.”
